True Colors

True Colors
Being yourself is not always easy. In fact, it is often much easier being like everyone else and “fitting in.” That way you don’t risk being alone or lonely. Unfortunately, if we don’t express our true feelings and desires we are living a lie. Anyone who has ever lied so that others would like them knows how bad you feel about yourself afterwards. To believe in yourself takes courage. Many of the people I first met when I moved to New York after college were living double lives. During the day they were pretending to be straight men and women at their jobs for fear of being fired or not getting promoted. Being gay or lesbian in places like New York is not considered a major obstacle to professional advancement as it once was, but people in New York and in cities around the world still hide their sexual orientation. They fear being fired, ostracized, and shunned by their peers. It is a terrible burden to carry around with you, and it is detrimental to both your physical and mental health. Whenever you hide who you are from others it prevents you from living a full and happy life. Fortunately, some very high profile individuals have step forward and admitted to the world that they are gay or lesbian. These courageous people include actor Ian Mckellen, pop star Elton John, and sports great Martina Navratilova. By openly telling the world who they are, they are able to encourage others to do the same. Now, teachers, parents, policeman, and people from all walks of life feel empowered to step forward and acknowledge who they really are. By doing so they have lifted a terrible burden from their lives and have set a great example for others to take that all-important step to living their lives to the fullest.
